Do I need planning permission for my loft conversion?

The question of whether planning permission is required is usually one of the first things that crops up when we’re talking to our clients! With this in mind, although planning permission isn’t required for most loft conversion projects, we thought we’d cover this issue in this month’s blog post.

Planning permission for loft conversions

As already mentioned, one of the first things we discuss with a new client is whether planning permission will be required. Most loft conversion projects don’t require planning permission as they are ‘permitted developments’, however it’s important to remember that building regulations must be met.

Whether planning permission is required or not will depend on a range of limits and conditions including the volume of the new space, the type of property e.g. terraced, semi-detached or detached, and whether the height of the existing roof will be extended. In addition, other factors which will need to be taken into consideration including the addition of new design features such as balconies, verandas or raised platforms.

Properties located in designated areas such as conservation areas may require planning permission for a loft conversion project and we’re happy to offer advice on this if required.
